Family Course
Saturdays 3- 5pm
May 3rd- 24th (4 weeks)
This course covers both hand-building and wheel throwing, taking you all the way through from a lump of clay to glazing. Your hand-built project will use slabs, but the outcome can be sculptural or functional. We recomend age 8+
Course Structure
Week 1: design and build using slabs + 45 minutes of wheel throwing
Week 2: fettle and carve slab projects, add relief details and handles + 45 minutes of wheel throwing
Week 3: underglaze decoration on slab pots and trimming on the wheel
Week 4: glazing all pots, using painting and dipping glazes
Cost
Course fees for families and young people are based on household income, and taken in three monthly installments, so that it's hopefully affordable for all to participate.
Prices are for one adult and one under-18, and include all materials and firing.
Low household income, under £32,500: three installments of £75
Basic household income £32,500- £50,500: three installments of £83
Intermediate household income £50,500- £68,500: three installments of £90
Higher household income, over £68,500: three installments of £97

Summer Courses
Monday- Friday 9am- 12.30pm (drop-off from 8.30am)
Week beginning July 21st
Week beginning July 28th
Young people will be split into two groups P6 & P7, S1- S3 and projects will be tailored to each age group, we have a ratio of 1 tutor to 6 participants
These are skills-based courses giving young-people the opportunity to learn all the basics of working with clay: slab building, coiling, wheel-throwing and glazing. The course includes all materials and firing. All pots are fired to stoneware temperature with food-safe glazes.
Course Structure

Wednesday: Pinch and Coil Project and Wheel throwing
Thursday: underglaze decoration on slab pots and trimming on the wheel
Friday: glazing all pots, using painting and dipping glazes

Who will be teaching the course?
Sara Jane is a long-term member of Open Artspace, a keen potter and textile artist. Sara Jane is a qualified teacher with over 20 years of experience working with children and young people. Before qualifying as a teacher Sara Jane studied Art and Design, then worked as a stop-motion animation puppet maker for Disney, MTV and Warner Brothers.
Giada is our fabulous studio technician, responsible for firing our members work and managing the studio. She has worked in school arts education for eight years, she has a degree in cultural heritage and a masters in theatre design, as well as formal training in arts education. Giada is a long-term member of Open Artspace, a keen potter and puppet maker.
